Frequently Asked Questions

How does WorldTrend detect trending events?

WorldTrend analyzes over 300,000 news articles daily using five independent anomaly detectors (z-score, Poisson, salience, slope, and changepoint). Entities showing abnormal growth across multiple detectors are clustered using NPMI co-occurrence analysis and Leiden community detection to form coherent events.

What data sources does WorldTrend use?

WorldTrend processes the GDELT Global Entity Graph (GEG), which covers news articles from virtually every country in over 100 languages. This provides entity-level analysis with salience scoring, enabling detection of both major headlines and emerging niche trends.

How is the trend score calculated?

The composite trend score combines seven factors: breadth (cluster connectivity), intensity (anomaly strength), confidence (multi-detector confirmation), salience (prominence in articles), freshness (recency of activity), reach (total media coverage), and novelty (how new the event is versus ongoing topics).

How often is the data updated?

Trend data is refreshed every 15 minutes from global news sources. The 3D visualization updates in real-time, with new events appearing and fading events gradually disappearing from the graph.
